Premier League:
Arsenal finished 8th in the Premier League during the 2019/20 season. Missing out on a spot in European competitions through league position. The Premier League season was paused in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually resuming in June. Arsenal struggled with inconsistency and defensive issues throughout the campaign. While also facing difficulties in closing out games. They  conceded goals consistently in the early part of the season. Arteta’s arrival saw an improvement in the number of goals conceded in the later parts of the season.

Managerial Change:
Manager Unai Emery started the season, but was relieved of his duties in November 2019 due to poor results. Mikel Arteta, a former Arsenal player and assistant coach at Manchester City, took over as the head coach in December 2019. Under Arteta’s management, Arsenal showed improvement in terms of defensive organisation and tactical discipline.

UEFA Europa League:
Arsenal progressed through the group stage, finishing first in Group F. Which included a 4-0 victory against Standard Liege. In the round of 32, Arsenal faced Olympiacos. Despite winning the first leg 1-0, they were eliminated due to a 1-2 loss in the return leg, with Olympiacos advancing on away goals.

FA Cup:
One of the highlights of Arsenal’s 2019/20 season was their success in the FA Cup. During their cup run, Arsenal defeated Leeds United, Bournemouth and Portsmouth, before beating Sheffield United in the quarter final. In the Semi Final, Arsenal played against Manchester City on July 18, 2020, at Wembley Stadium. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the hero for Arsenal, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory.

In the final, also held at Wembley Stadium on August 1, 2020, Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2-1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the hero of the match, scoring both goals for the Gunners as he had done in the previous round. This victory secured Arsenal’s place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League for the 2020/21 season. This was the 14th time in Arsenal’s history that they had lifted the FA Cup. More than any other club.

League Cup:
After dispatching Nottingham Forest 5-0 in the Third Round, Arsenal were drawn against Liverpool. Sharing a 5-5 classic at Anfield, which needed penalties to settle the tie. With Liverpool ultimately defeating Arsenal 5-4 in the shootout, seeing the Gunners eliminated from the competition.

Overall:
While the league position might not have reflected the progress made under Arteta, the FA Cup triumph was a significant achievement for Arsenal in the 2019/20 season. The club also saw the emergence of young talents like Bukayo Saka and improved defensive stability under Arteta’s guidance. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished as Arsenal’s top scorer, contributing crucial goals, including the final rounds of the FA Cup .The season laid the foundation for Arteta’s ongoing project at the club.
