Football Leagues & Cups - 2023-24 English Competitions
The English football pyramid filters down from the Premier League all the way down to non-league football. With tiers 2-4 (Championship to League Two) run by the English Football League and tiers 5-10 (National League downwards) administered by the Football Association. Below tier 10 the feeder leagues are run by the relevant county FA’s individually. Promotion and Relegation sees opportunities to move between the leagues. European competitions enable qualifiers from individual countries to compete with each other for Europe’s top prizes. The UEFA Champions League is seen as the top competition in Europe, with the prestige of becoming ‘European Champions’. Top teams from each individual league system qualify in the highest places in their league. Additionally, there is qualification places available for the UEFA Europa League (formally the UEFA Cup). These are offered for league positions below the Champions League places and in some cases, domestic cup winners. Third placed teams from the Champions League Group Stage also drop down into this competition. The UEFA Europa Conference League was added to the competition pool in the 2021-22 season. It is primarily contested by teams from lower ranked UEFA member associations, but with additional entrants from the Europa League.
